Biodiesel fuel is becoming big business. Even in the US, where the 4 x 4 is king, drivers are converting their cars to the vegetable-based oil and garages are installing specialised pumps. At present, Europe is lagging behind.
Rushton was recently called out to the Far East, where I was asked review a new plant in this ever-expanding industry.
Despite never having valued a biodiesel site before, chemical plants in general are very similar. There is little separating the process from that of a brewery. You take raw materials - stick them into a big mixer - heat them - evaporate them - and you have your end product.
The job in itself was straightforward. As biodiesel production is a fairly new concept, we didn’t have any of the usual problems with out-of-date equipment.
The only irony of this environmentally sound job was that I had to fly halfway round the world to complete it.
